Dr Segal offers expert, compassionate and personalised cardiac care. Over the past 25 years, he’s helped thousands of patients to understand, treat and manage their heart rhythm challenges and improve their quality of life.

He sees patients privately at London’s The Harley Street Clinic where he specialises in electrophysiology, which is the study of heart rhythm disorders. He’s conducted more than 2,500 electrophysiology studies and catheter ablations and over 1,800 device implantation procedures during his career. That includes performing catheter ablations for atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disorders, as well as implanting pacemakers, defibrillators (ICDs), loop recorders, biventricular pacing systems and other cardiac devices.

He cares for patients with rapid palpitations and tachycardias, irregular heartbeats, ectopic or ‘skipped’ beats, pauses and slow heartbeats, dizzy spells and blackouts, as well as breathlessness or tiredness due to atrial fibrillation (AF).  Dr Segal also performs pacemaker lead extractions and implants left atrial appendage occlusion devices. These can help reduce the risk of stroke in people with AF who can’t take anticoagulants, or when anticoagulants have failed to help manage symptoms.

Clinical and research focus

Dr Segal’s previous research focus was on atrial fibrillation ablation, mapping ventricular arrhythmias and the diagnosis of Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT). He also had specialist interests in conduction disease in patients with myotonic dystrophy and in the development of scoring systems to identify risk factors and guide decisions about cardiac device implantation in different patient groups. He now focuses on patient care.

He also presents and publishes both nationally and internationally on key aspects of cardiac arrhythmias and device implantation.

Education and Training

Dr Segal graduated from King’s College London and King’s College Hospital, London in 1995. He initially trained in cardiology at St Bartholomew’s and The London Chest Hospitals.

His specialist postgraduate training in cardiology, electrophysiology and device implantation was undertaken at St Mary’s Hospital, The Heart Hospital (UCLH) and at St George’s Hospital in London. In 2007, he completed a fellowship in pacing and electrophysiology at Professor George Klein’s world-renowned electrophysiology unit in London, Ontario, Canada.

During his training, Dr Segal undertook a period of research focused on mapping complex ventricular arrhythmias at The National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London for which he was awarded a doctorate in 2008. He presented part of that research at the 2004 Heart Rhythm Society in San Francisco, USA where he won first prize in the highly prestigious Young Investigator Award competition for clinical research.

Consultant roles

In 2008, Dr Segal was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at what’s now University College Hospital at Westmoreland Street, before moving to the Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital in April 2015 when cardiac services were transferred. He led education and training in electrophysiology for 10 years and was programme director for overseas fellows, as well as lead for the implantation of left atrial appendage occlusion devices.

Dr Segal also led arrhythmia and electrophysiology services at University College Hospital for 11 years, where he ran weekly arrhythmia clinics, until he left the NHS in January 2026. He was made a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society and Royal College of Physicians in 2013.
